In her 27 years as clergy and wedding officiant, Cantor Ellie Shaffer has been honored to officiate and co-officiate at over 800 interfaith wedding ceremonies. For mixed-faith couples, she conducts a personalized wedding service unique to each couple, using songs, poems, readings and text with interactive sequences between bride and groom. Traditional Jewish practices such as the sharing of wine by bride and groom, breaking of the wine glass and the use of the wedding canopy (Chupah) are joyfully included.
Jewish Christian couples often request that the wedding ceremony include the lighting of the Unity Candle, symbolizing the merging of two families into one family. Ecumenical readings from Scriptures and other sources are encouraged, read by special people chosen by the couple.
Some brides and grooms prefer wedding ceremonies that lean more to the spiritual rather than to the religious. Their wishes are respected and honored.
Cantor Ellie, as she is affectionately called, is Cantor Emerita of Temple Shalom in Levittown, Pennsylvania, after serving on the synagogue's pulpit ten years, preceded by ten years at Temple Beth Torah in Northeast Philadelphia, and stints at Congregation Beth Or in Springhouse, PA, and at M'Kor Shalom in Cherry Hill, NJ.
She has been active in interfaith work for as long as she can remember, believing strongly that Love is the most positive and important force on this earth, and that it is "What the World Needs, Now".
Cantor Ellie usually officiates alone, but welcomes collaboration with any wedding officiant whom the bride and groom choose, providing that person is open to an ecumenical ceremony. Upon request, she will happliy provide contact information for priests and ministers who have collaborated with her with great success. She can also arrange to include duo-clergy as a "package", if preferred.
